Our Hartville Veterinarian Can Treat Your Pet's Allergies

Seasonal allergies are common among humans; you may even suffer from them yourself. Runny, itchy eyes, sneezing, and running sinuses are all signs of a seasonal allergy. You may not know that these allergies are common in pets as well. Our Hartville veterinarian treats many cases of pet allergies each season.

What Are Common Signs That Your Pet Has Allergies

Some symptoms of pet allergies are similar to those of humans. Allergic reactions occur when an animal's immune system begins to recognize everyday substances as foreign invaders, which triggers an immunological response. Allergic reactions can take place when the irritant is inhaled, eaten, or comes in physical contact with the pet's skin. If your dog or cat is displaying these symptoms, the cause may be an allergic reaction:

  • dry or itchy, red skin, including at the base of the tail
  • loss of hair
  • sneezing
  • vomiting and/or diarrhea
  • itchy ears and/or recurrent ear infections
  • chewing at paws
  • runny eyes or sinuses
  • constant licking

The animal may also suffer from a secondary infection - bacterial or yeast - as a result of the allergic reaction which can cause scabbing, hair loss, and sores.  Allergens include ordinary substances that the animal has been in contact with all its life including certain food products, mold, dust mites, fleas, feathers, pollen, shampoo, and more.
